Oilers acquire Ryan Whitney

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

TSN.ca is reporting that the Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenseman Ryan Whitney (Scituate, Mass.) from the Anaheim Ducks for Lubomir Visnovsky and a 6th-round pick in 2010.
Whitney, 27, who was a member of the silver medal-winning U.S. Men’s Olympic Team after being named late as an injury replacement, had four goals and 28 points in 62 games with the Ducks. He was acquired by Anaheim a little over a year ago from Pittsburgh for forward Chris Kunitz, who played a solid role in helping the Penguins to their first Stanley Cup since 1992. Whitney was the fifth overall pick in the 2002 draft by Pittsburgh and was a standout defender for Boston University before turning pro.

Visnovsky, 33, had 10 goals and 33 points in 52 contests with the last-place Oilers. The undersized but skilled blue liner has been an effective power play presence throughout his NHL career, which began after he was the 118th overall pick in the 2000 NHL Draft out of the top Slovakian pro league.
